ABSTRACT The city of Latakia has a distinct spatial and cultural identity that is formed through the interaction of individuals with the surrounding environment, The urban and architectural fabric of the Old City is considered one of the pillars of local identity, similar in its general context to other cities on the Syrian coast, but it has unique characteristics. This research project defines the local identity of the city of Latakia by identifying types of basic traditional dwelling and understanding the language of traditional dwellings, based on literature review, field visits, aerial photographs, and cadastral maps. This study shows that courtyards dwellings are considered the main prototype of habitation in the city of Latakia; they meet the environmental and social needs of the population. It is recommended that the architectural identity is not neglected and should be used in shaping future architecture.
